What's your favorite scary movie?
Well, I can definitely tell you mine's definitely rising to be Scream (2022)! The addition to the highly popular meta horror movie series brings together old previous heroes and fresh faces as we are taken back to the town of Woodsboro as the infamous Ghostface returns to strike terror and fear into folks once again. Set 10 or 11 years after the events of Scream 4, 25-year-old Samantha Carpenter returns to her hometown of Woodsboro where her past comes back to haunt her as a new Ghostface makes her his new target. Now she must get the help the old survivors in order to stop the new killer.
This film, like the ones that became before, uses a certain movie theme that they base everything around. The first movie basing everything off scary movies, the second movie basing everything off of sequels, the third basing everything off of trilogies, and the fourth basing everything off of remakes. This one how ever, is basing everything off of the theme of requels.
Now, words can't begin to describe how excited I was for this movie. I have been a fan of this series since I was 8 or 9 and saw Scream 2 on tv with my mom and brother. and then asking my parents for the films for my upcoming brithday. I got the first three movies in a boxset and then the next year the fourth movie came out when I was 10. I was taken to see it in theaters and it is still one of my favorite memories and one of my earliest that I can remember. Little side-note, they made a show for Scream and it was awesome, still say they should have made one more season. Now, I, like many others, was begging for a Scream 5. But when the director of all four films, Wes Craven, passed away in 2015 (RIP a real horror icon king), that wish was slowly dying. But in 2019, that old wish was finally coming true: Scream 5, soon to be called Scream, was happening. And not before long we had some a new cast featuring some of the my favorite actors: Jenna Ortega (You), Mason Gooding (Booksmart, Love, Victor), Dylan Minnette (13 Reasons Why), Melissa Barrera (In The Heights), Jack Quid (The Boys- never seen it but I 've heard about it and I want to see it) and Kyle Gallner (A Nightmare on Elm Street, Jennifer's Body). And we got the original people coming people: David Arquette, Courtney Cox, Marley Shelton from the 4th film (this was a nice surprise), and NEVE CAMPBELL!!! Along with the new directors who were the ones who directed the movie Ready or Not as well as the writers of that movie, this was really shaping up to be a good movie.
The characters that were introduced in the new movie are somewhere in between interesting and just there. But I really liked how they were in some ways tied to the original characters from the first film. An example being Mindy and Chad being the niece and nephew of Randy Meeks from the first two films. They really bring a new type of generation to the Scream Universe, especially ones who are more in depth with today's more popular type of horror movies. The cast really shine in their parts, three I want to give a shoutout to are Melissa Barrera (Samantha), Jenna Ortega (Tara), and Jasmin Savoy Brown (Mindy). Melissa's Sam really brings a fresh face to the franchise as a new heroine/final girl. A girl haunted by a dark family secret, spending her life running from it and now being forced to face it. Honestly, with the way that Sidney wasn't in this movie that much, plus how well it was written so you wouldn't think about it much, and with how well this movie has done to the point I wouldn't be surprised if they decided to make another film, I could see them making Sam the new final girl for the Scream series. Jasmine's Mindy really was one of my favorites. She's definitely this film's/generations Randy, ironic since she's his niece. She was funny, smart, and slightly quick on her feet. I've never related to a character more than I have with her, especially during the part where she was explaining requels and horror movies nowadays. Jenna's Tara definitely stole all her scenes, especially the opening scene. Now, if you're fan of the Scream series, you know that the opening scenes are the ones that set the tone of the movies, the opening kills. This movie did something that none of the other's have done: They let the person live to be in the movie longer. It really helped establish this movie as different from its predecessors and honestly, it makes this one of my favorites over the first movies opening scene. I know, I know, the first one's the best, but this one gives it a run for its money. And Jenna really sold her performance in it. The old characters? Perfection as always. 11 years later, and they still jumped back into these roles like it was nothing and they've been playing these roles for 25 years now. Absolutely amazing. Especially how updated these characters are now after the events of the last film, and how their lives have changed since then. Dewey is no longer the sheriff or married to Gale, Gale has moved to New York and is now a morning talk show host, and Sidney has moved on with life, is married and has children! I really do find how Neve is able to just bring back the incredible character that is Sidney Prescott with ease just inspiring.
This movie is like a love letter to every person who is a fan of the original Scream movie (if not the entire series). With all it's big and tiny references to the original Scream and all it's callbacks. It had more callbacks and references then Scream 4, which was following the theme of remakes, and literally basing everything off of that by making the new characters the "remake" versions of the original ones. It really showed that the new writers and directors really care about the franchise and its characters. They understood that the Scream movie holds a special place in many horror movie fans hearts, as mentioned in the film when the characters were talking about "Stab," the movie within the Scream Universe that is based on the events of the first Scream movie. It's the film that made many fall in love with horror, it introduced them to a new type of horror, hell, it did that to me and inspired me to want to direct (thank you, Wes). Scream was ahead of its time, it brought something new to the world of horror, making it an icon in movie history. And this movie helped establish that and helped people remember. They had the opportunity to reboot the series, start from scratch, but they didn't and they took an approach that, in my opinion, really paid off.
My score is 8/10. Definitely go see this movie. You won't regret it!
